A fantastic start to the season at St Cross for the U11’s first game of hard-ball cricket.
We arrived with 9 players and St Cross kindly agreed to lend us 2 fielders [one of whom was fantastic – more on that later]. We elected to have 12 overs each innings as it was cold and a bit gloomy. St Cross won the toss and put us into bat first. Ben Marshall opened the batting with Matt Cassar and built a confident 29 run partnership.
After 7 overs, we decided to retire Ben and Matt so the others could get a chance to bat as it looked like they might bat out the 12 overs with ease! Caspar Kwiatkowski came in with Ewan Macbride but a bit of a mix-up with the calling meant Ewan got run out without facing a ball. At least he got to face another over while we waited for Lottie Fuller to pad up. She’d been caught out by the first-ball dismissal for Ewan. Lotte and Caspar then went on to forge another wonderful batting partnership taking Twyford’s total score to 68 at the end of the allotted 12 overs. Twyford very much in the driving seat at the break.
Twyford took to the field with Nat Alkin keeping wicket and Jack Hinton opened the bowling very effectively, with a nice line and length. Ewan struck in the next over, clean bowling St Cross’ number 2 batsman. A wicket maiden to start his 2015 season. Excellent stuff. Joseph Cassar and Jack helped to restrict St Cross to very low scoring with their bowling before Thomas Snowdon got the next wicket,  bowling their number 3 batsman. Thomas then struck again in his next over, with an excellent catch from the very good – and very sportsman-like! – fielder provided by St Cross. Matt, Caspar, Ben and Lottie all bowled an over each and helped to restrict St Cross’ final score to 27. All in all a great start to the season for Twyford who look as if they are already seasoned pros with the hard-ball. The winter training has really paid off.
There were lots of great performances but I think Thomas Snowdon deserves Man of The Match for his fantastic bowling – especially since he was quite nervous about bowling at all.
Thanks to Richard Fuller for Umpiring and helping with the organisation of the team and to Dave Hinton for scoring. Thanks also to all the parents for coming to support and for the drinks and snacks at the interval – and happy birthday to Inge Kwiatkowski!
Luke Alkin
